  • Poor Management: Riverside County budget problems hit public safety

The first responsibility of government is to protect its citizens from enemies, foreign and domestic.

    But not in Riverside County.

"Riverside County's financial woes have worsened to the point that officials now face tough choices about the future of the county's sacred cow: public safety.

Finance Director Ed Corser has projected that the Sheriff's Department, which runs the county's jails and patrols the streets, will finish the current budget year $17 million in the red, based on the way things were going three months into fiscal 2010-11."

Instead of outsourcing services, ending the union monopoly over government and employees, instead of ending programs without results, they are worried about finding money for cops and firefighters.

Time for elected officials to gets their priorities right. What do you think?
