  • California Community colleges face payroll crisis

Thanks to the lack of a budget, our community colleges may not be able to pay salaries or vendors.

"Faculty and staff at some of California’s more than 100 community colleges may not get paid because the state Legislature remains unable to come up with a budget, three months into the fiscal year.

No budget means no state payment of some $840 million to the colleges.

Its the third month in a row that the payments, which fund the bulk of college operations in most districts, have been deferred."

Like government k-12 schools, these colleges are forced to borrow money, and will repay with interest. That means more money for banks, less for education.

All of this because the legislature and Governor can not do their job, giving us a balanced budget.

"The late state budget has also interrupted Cal Grant payments to some community college students. It is estimated that more than 60 percent of community college Cal Grant recipients, or roughly 41,000 students, have not received their grants for the fall semester. The awards of up to $1,551 help students pay for fees and other expenses such as textbooks, transportation, housing and childcare.

Cal Grants help fuel local economies, says Mr. Scott. The untimely delay means our students wont be spending money and local business will miss out on the revenue opportunity while the money sits in the state coffers.

Why is Arnold giving speeches and traveling around the world? Why are legislators in their districts raising money and campaigning, they need to be in Sacramento working.

Why is California in trouble? Because they play instead of work.
