It is dangerous to be a citizen of Chula Vista in San Diego County. The local elected officials are so creative, in raising taxes not cutting spending, that they have decided a 5% TAX on calls outside the State or to another country is a great idea.
"In November, Chula Vista residents will decide whether they wish to tack additional taxes on their cell phones, cable landlines, and internet. The measure, Proposition H, would expand the scope of taxable services under the city’s current Utility Users Tax. If passed, the city will begin to tax for the first time out-of-state and international calls at the rate of five percent.
Placed on the ballot by the City Council, Proposition H marks the Councils second attempt to generate more revenue to the city through additional taxation. A year ago the same City Council spent more than $250,000 to order a special mail ballot election requesting a 10-year, one-cent increase to the city’s sales tax. That measure was struck down by an overwhelming margin of voters.
The controversial measure is chiefly supported by city officials who argue the taxes are needed to fill a projected $12 million shortfall. Proposition H would bring in almost $6 million."
Imagine a business having to pay an extra 5% for phone calls to customers and potential customers.
What a great way to force jobs to move to other cities. Phone banks will be killed, large firms will be forced to choose--pay the tax or hire workers.
Chula Vista needs a good Recall. The Council members who put this on the ballot understand that if this tax can be enforced, then they have free reign to tax everything--who about a told for people from outside the city to come into the city? Why not?
Government has too much money, no new taxes
