Yesterday I noted that Merced might soon be going bankrupt.
Now, we know that Antioch, in Contra Costa County, will be bankrupt if the voter say NO to tax increases.
"The dreaded B word bankruptcy has been mentioned several times by Mayor Jim Davis as a possibility, perhaps likelihood, for Antiochs government in the next year or two if voters dont approve a half-cent sales tax hike this November.
But City Manager Jim Jakel is not so sure. The chances (of bankruptcy) are certainly less than 50-50, he said in an interview last week. We control our own destiny on those decisions. We don’t have substantial indebtedness where we have to make payments to an outside party.
But city officials are looking at a $4 million budget shortfall in the fiscal year starting next July."
Here is a better idea. Vote No on the tax increases. Force government to become legitimate--force it to sell unneeded property--keep fire and police facilities, road maintenance facilities and city hall--the rest is sold to be run by private interests--with no tax dollars.
Government needs to go cold turkey; anything is assisting its addiction.
