Democrats love taxes. The last round of taxes on cigarettes were great--it caused more people to stop smoking. This created less revenues. Now the Democrats want to add a nickel tax on each cigarette--cute, huh? Instead of saying the new tax is one dollar a pack, they "only" want a nickel per cigarette.
"The tax revenues would be deposited into a special fund to finance research and research facilities focused on detecting, preventing, treating, and curing cancer, heart disease, emphysema, and other tobacco-related diseases, and to finance prevention programs. It also creates a nine-member committee charged with administering the fund."
Here is the question: is it the role of government to be doing this research in the first place? Sounds great, but this is how government will nickel and dime us into poverty.
