There is still hope that the multi-billion dollar boondoggle profiting unions and big corporations, while bankrupting families, is about to end.
"According to Ronald Utt, the Herbert and Joyce Morgan senior research fellow for the Thomas A. Roe Institute for Economic Policy Studies at the Heritage Foundation:
* Even in a strong economy, building high-speed rail makes little sense, offering minimal reductions in travel times at exorbitant costs.
* For instance, a proposed $1.1 billion investment in the Kansas City-St. Louis-Chicago route would only allow customers to reach their destinations 10 percent faster than they could by driving between Chicago and St. Louis.
* The $1.25 billion federal investment in a $3.2 billion project to build a high-speed rail line between Orlando and Tampa would reduce travel time between the two cities to less than one hour, compared to about 90 minutes by car."
Rail is about unions getting jobs at premium pay. High Speed Rail is about corporations making billions, selling products to create a choo-choo train that can not be paid for without large taxpayer subsidies--money that belongs to education, roads, health care and public safety.
The California system will never be built--too expensive, no money to operate, too many environmental problems and even the liberals who voted for it say, "not in my backyard".
It is time to tell Sacramento to be honest and close the planning process and save the rest of the money. Unions and corporations need to be told, you have taken enough from the public--now earn an honest living.
