Last year San Diego parents were told that due to teacher cutbacks, larger class sizes, loss of funds for equipment, maintenance and technology, the "professionals" claimed the government schools would collapse--we need more money.
What is the result?
"Fifty-six percent of students scored high in English, nearly 4 percent more than last year.
Math scores grew by 5 percent, history scores did too, and science scores grew by 8 percent.
Its English scores tied with scores in San Francisco as the best among large urban school districts in California.
Budget cuts made for bigger classes and fewer supplies in San Diego Unified this year.
A new superintendent was criticized as being weak on instructional savvy. Critics seeking to overhaul the district have called it an outright failure.
Yet state test scores jumped once again in San Diego Unified schools, rivaling their impressive gains last year:"
Maybe a bloated budget caused lower scores? Maybe corruption and incompetent teachers caused the lower scores?
Or maybe by cutting fat has caused better education in San Diego.
Obviously, bigger budgets do not translate into quality education. Maybe a few more cuts and we can get world class education in government schools.
