The Left believes you can control elections by "reform". For years they have created "campaign finance laws" to stop the massive spending on campaigns.
Yet after each new "reform" the amount of spending goes UP, not down. The "goo-goos" (good government) types want to take control of the Internet for the good of society and apply more "campaign finance reform
Now the FPPC goo-goos want to have bloggers report if they are being paid to do blogging for candidates--what a joke.
A candidate will pay $3-500 per month for a banner ad. Normal price--but for $3,000 a month you give it a premier place on your site--still, that is how the system operates. But, what if the premium spot also came with a wink and a nod to do "hit pieces" on the candidates opponent? How would anybody know this was paid for? Or, hire the firm of the blogger to do very little work, and then he does bad things to your opponent on the blog.
What if a firm friendly to the candidate hires a blogger to work for them, legitimately--and as a favor you tear apart a candidate.
Goo-goos always sound sincere and good. Sadly, even those who know better continue to play a game on the public--pass laws or regulations, claim you cleaned up politics and you become a "hero"-as phony as a character on a TV show.
The problem of bloggers being paid for writing articles harming candidates is a problem. I have never done that. When I attack a candidate it is because they are bad for the State or the Republican Party. In the last election I did a series of articles about a candidate that as a council member supported the use of tax dollars to get jobs for illegal aliens, voted nine times in one year to raise taxes. He was bad for the State and the GOP. I did not get paid to do that, I did it because it was the right thing to do. Under the FPPC proposal I could face an investigation for exercising my First Amendment rights.
Goo-goos need to be patted on the head and told to face reality. Their previous "reforms" have been failures. This one will as well. But it makes great headlines.
