The County of Santa Barbara has conference room facilities, all over the county. Yet, when it comes to interviewing potential CEO's, they hire a swanky, expensive hotel, to provide a meeting room.
"When the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors meets in closed session Monday to interview candidates to succeed outgoing CEO Michael Brown, the get-together won't take place at the board's "headquarters," on Anapamu Street.
Nor will the five-member panel quiz hopefuls for the $230,000-per-year position at the site of their normal North County meetings, the Betteravia Government Center on East Lakeside Parkway in Santa Maria.
The board instead will meet, greet and scrutinize at the landmark Upham Hotel in downtown Santa Barbara, a beautiful Victorian on De la Vina Street that boasts Louie's California Bistro, rated very good to excellent by Zagat."
Where the interviews should be held? "In a follow-up phone call, Ms. Muth added, "The Upham was selected because we're trying to protect the whole process from distractions and interruptions and do a good job of conducting the interviews."
“Andy Caldwell, executive director of the Coalition of Labor, Agriculture and Business and a frequent critic of county fiscal matters, told the News-Press that holding the interviews at a place that costs taxpayers more money is a waste of their money.
The county, he added, should have set its sights a little lower? And perhaps offered sack lunches.?
"They're obviously trying to impress the applicants," he said. "They should have it at the Miramar. That would give the prospective applicants a more accurate portrayal of what they're getting themselves into by taking the job." The Miramar is a local, run down hotel that once had class. Now it is a dump that is being refurbished.
Families are counting their dimes. Government is burning our "benjamins". Fire them all in Santa Barbara.
