  • In California, elsewhere, efforts intensify to close online sales tax loophole

You are sitting at your desk and want to buy a new computer. You go on line, check out what is available and place an order.

In a few days the FedEx truck shows up at your door--and the State of California wants almost 10% of the cost in taxes, just because you live in the State.

"Web-savvy shoppers can often save big buying online instead of at the local mall. But a chunk of the savings comes at the expense of state and local governments, in the form of sales taxes that are never paid on many Web purchases.

The losses add up for cash-starved state and local governments across the country: California alone loses out on more than $1 billion a year."

This is not about government services that need to be paid for (the FedEx people pay plenty in gas taxes, payroll taxes, etc.). This is about an out of control government spending too much and wanting to steal money to spend even more.

Ask the candidates in your district if they support sales tax on Internet sales--if they do, vote against them. It is your money, not the governments.
