  • Elder statesmen call for substance in governors race

Do you think candidate for office should provide the public with plans on how they will solve the deficit or pension crisis? I do.

Do you think they should debate, early and often, I do.

"In a Silicon Valley meeting last week, Democrat Jerry Brown brushed off a question with a quip. "How do you do things without any money?" he asked. "Very difficult, but I have a plan. I'll tell you after the election." Meanwhile, Republican Meg Whitman has scoffed at Brown's idea for 10 town-hall-style debates, insisting that she is the only candidate with "a plan" to fix California, a reference to her glossy 48-page book with big color pictures and few black-and-white details.

I'm not laughing, Jerry. I'm not fooled, Meg.

Nor are John Vasconcellos and Bill Bagley.

The two former legislators have been appalled at the lack of substance during the gubernatorial primary. The largely fiber-free discourse appears destined to continue in the absence of adult intervention. Neither Brown nor Whitman has offered a fix for the $19 billion shortfall that legislators are facing today - or a plausible plan to avoid future imbalances. Enter Vasconcellos, a Democrat from the South Bay, and Bagley, a Republican from the North Bay, with a call for the candidates to answer 20 questions about their philosophies and state policies."

California deserves better. Brown saying he will tell us of his fiscal plans "after" election reminds me of Pelosi, his friend, saying we will find out what is in ObamaCare AFTER we pass it.

Arrogance is the problem. Debate and a transparent series of plans is how the public will decide.

Failure to do this will result in another historically low voter turnout. Why vote for a pig in a poke?
