While Arnold is slapping himself on the back, congratulating himself for "saving" the State, his legacy is getting worse--based on the facts.
His "historic" labor agreement saves us $72 million--while his deficits over six years are close to $140 BILLION. The agreements cover 23,000 employees--out of 170,000 employees. A start, but no more than getting into motion to pass the starting line.
"The concessions are a major win for Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a financial hawk on pension costs, who had threatened to not sign a state budget without such changes. It's also a commonsense judgment by union leaders that state's financial crisis and the public mood demand sacrifice.
The four labor groups are a small fraction of the state's total workforce, totaling 23,000 employees out of 170,000. Also, the concessions such as extra pension contributions by workers and later retirement dates amount to only $72 million set against the state's $19 billion financial shortfall."
Note the Chronicle, using government figures, lies about the total size of the deficit. Then again, you have so few reporters at the paper--which is about to announce more cut backs in a matter of months.
End the union monopoly over government. End the government mandated bribe paying to corrupt unions. Allow for outsourcing, instead of government control of projects. Has anybody noticed the DMV being closed for a few days each month? How many extra employees does the DMV have? How about other government agencies?
