  • Funds likely to save court jobs, end closures

Good news? "An unexpected infusion of cash from the state should allow California's courts to end their one-day-a-month closures in July and will avert planned layoffs of more than one-fifth of San Francisco Superior Court employees, judicial officials said Monday.

While Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger was announcing proposals Friday to eliminate state welfare and health insurance programs and slash other social services, his proposed 2010-11 budget contained good news for the courts: withdrawal of a previous plan to cut their funding by $100 million."

Why more money? How about trials that start on time? What about court postponements based on fishing trips, a cold or a hangover? Why not force the judges to work a full day. I had a friend who was an LA Superior Court judge--he took one day a week off to play golf.

Worse, you have a jury system that wastes the time, and tens of millions of dollars or lost work time, for private citizens. The judicial system is broke. Fix it before you waste more money.
