  • WSJ's Political Diary - "Open Season On CA Conservatives?"

Flat statement: Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger does not care about the welfare or success of the Republican Party. In 2006 when he ran for re-election, his campaign consultant, Steve Schmidt was asked if Arnold was a Republican. His famous answer was, “No, Arnold is not a Republican; he is a member of the "Arnold" Party, a Party" of one." As best as can be told, since the end of that election 3.5 years ago, he has not raised a dime for the California Republican Party, he has instead taken many opportunities to denounce the Party.

Flat Statement: State Senator Abel Maldonado does not like the Republican Party and has taken his legislative record from being a solid conservative to being a predictable vote for the Democrat Party on key issues, especially tax increases.

That is why they have joined together in what appears to be a vendetta against the Republican Party--that is what Prop. 14 is about--the so called open primary is really a "people shut your mouths, by regulation we will kill political freedom.

The Arnold/Abel measure (brought about by blackmail by Abel, the Democrats needed his vote to raise taxes by $25 billion--he wanted to kill the political party that spawned him) will end the right of people to electorally participate in third parties. By the terms of the measure NO third party candidate will be on the November ballot. In some places the voters will only have the choice of one political party on the November ballot.

This is NOT Austria or any other socialist/totalitarian State--but Arnold and Abel prefer that to free elections.
