"THE CLOSURE of the NUMMI plant in Fremont this week is more than a tragic ending nearly a century of car manufacturing in the Bay Area and the loss of 4,700 well-paying jobs. It is symptomatic of California's decline as a magnet for businesses, especially in manufacturing.
"It's not financially viable" to operate NUMMI in California, according to James Lentz, president of Toyota USA. Unfortunately, that comment could be applied to other industries as well.
Toyota is not leaving the United States. It will continue to operate and grow in the Midwest and South, where labor conditions and the business climate are friendlier to business."
What are those conditions?
Low tax States, no income tax States, States that are run well. Most importantly the workers do not have to pay bribes or kickbacks to corrupt organizations to hold their jobs.
Don't those conditions sound good to you? That could be California, if we want it. It is up to you. Ask Palin said in Nevada the other day, "Do not sit down, do not shut up."
