An honest Democrat wants to raise taxes. And, he says so, directly. "Now the title of the initiative in circulation says it "changes the legislative vote requirement necessary to pass the state budget, and to raise taxes, from two-thirds to a simple majority."
Democrats love to raise taxes, but hate the word. "John Burton, the powerful chairman of the state Democratic Party, hasn't signed on, and Lakoff is ticked at Democratic Attorney General Jerry Brown. Brown's office decides the title and summary of what appears on the ballot and has reframed the initiative by adding one powerful word: "taxes."
Few words have karma as bad as "taxes," Lakoff said, which is why the linguist had chosen "revenue" instead."
