This is what we know about the San Francisco Chronicle:
1. That by using non union printing presses, the newspaper saved $25 million in one year. Imagine how much government would save if it were not a union monopoly. Could it be that our deficit is due in large part to the premium pay (payoffs) to unions? The workers could earn more money by not having to pay "dues" (bribes) to union for the "right"to work.
"Meanwhile, the paper's long-term deal with Montreal-based Transcontinental to print the Chron at its massive new Fremont plant -- non-union -- is reportedly saving the paper $25 million a year. That's the kind of money the paper used to lose in, oh, 25 weeks."
2. In one year the Chronicle got rid of 60% of its employees. "Michael Cabanatuan, a longtime Chron reporter and the president of the California Media Workers Guild, said that the paper's staff is only 40 percent of what it was at this time last year."
3. It is now profitable--but circulation is still dropping faster than the credibility of NBC management.
Now you know the cost of unions--the deficit of a newspaper.
Hopefully Sacramento and city hall will see the value in ending a monopoly that is killing the economy of California.
