The news is finally out, and Jay Leno has it. The Governor has chosen State Senator Abel Maldonado for Lt. Governor, to replace the career politico John Garamendi, who ran off to Washington (guess he thought the Sacramento deficit was not big enough).
A a recap on Maldonado: He voted to raise taxes in February--the highest increase in the history of State's. To "get" his vote, the Guv and Democrats agreed to put a measure on the ballot in 2010 that would end political parties in California. Nominees, could under the Maldonado plan, be of the same Party. Maybe this is because Abel could not get the GOP nomination in most districts--and in 2006 could not beat Tony Strickland in the race for Controller, mainly because most felt Abel was not a Republican.
He ran for Assembly as pro-life, and changed. Maldonado votes for big government, loves deficit and high taxes. Abel was a strong supporter of the job killing minimum wage increase.
But, Arnold wants him. Oh, what does Abel think of the Governor? "Our governor cares about one thing only, and that's Arnold Schwarzenegger," a shattered Maldonado told the Los Angeles Times after the election that year. "I kind of felt like I got left holding the bag. ... When he needs Latinos, Latinos are always there for him. When Latinos need him, the answer's been 'no.'"
He later apologized and recanted the comments." Sounds like the Governors type of politico.
This sets up a GOP primary next year between either Senator Sam Aarnestad or Senator Jeff Denham. If both are in the race, it is possible for Abel to win the nomination. If it is only one, than in 2011 Abel will be back running the family farm, under the taxes and regulations he supported.
Oh, how significant is this appointment? How serious is it? Will he release a press statement, have a joint press conference, tell the legislature in a formal document.
No, even Arnold is not making this appointment with a straight face--he is doing it on the Jay Leno Show. Shows how serious the Governor is about the State of California!!
What do you think? It has been suggested by some that we commence a 24 hour "nice nice" period. Good idea. Of course all above is fact, I have yet to give my opinion of the new (if the Democrats agree--oh, did I mention that weeks ago the Guv asked the Democrats for permission to appoint Abel, and they agreed?).
I will wait 24 hours to give my opinion. You do not have to wait. Write your thoughts directly on my web site.
