  • Guv Says We Will Build a Peripheral Canal

The people of California voted no on a Peripheral Canal in the early 1980's. Since then few have even raised the issue.

One of the key problems with the proposed canal is the cost. Not the cost to build but the cost in property taxes to the counties that will lose at least one million acres of prime farm land to the ocean salt that will creep into the soil from the lack of pressure of the water that will be displaced. The value of those one million acres of prime land will be zero--for years.

But, the Governor, still believes in this effort. "Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, visiting an area where sentiment against the Peripheral Canal is intense, told a business group in Stockton that the state was "going to fix the delta and to build a canal around the delta." That is why the just proposed $11 billion water bond will be defeated--farmers, residents of Northern California and people concerned about the environment and property rights will oppose the bond.

The cost of the bond? $600 million dollars every year in the budget for 30 years--that is money not going to education, public safety or health care.

We need water, but this is not the answer. The water already exists, but judges, not nature, are keeping it from us. Oh, due to EIR's. lawsuits and refusal to sell--hence eminent domain to steal private land, it will take more than a generation to build. By then California will be depopulated, due to lack of water (and other bad policies) that the remaining people will not need the extra supply of water.
