Ross Johnson is a strange person. As a legislator he voted as a conservative. As a political leader he wanted to stifle free speech.
Now, his prized political finance plan--which he thought would, and should, stifle free speech has been found to do the opposite. His plan to "limit" free speech in politics and public policy has actually opened the door to the Constitutional mandated freedom of speech. He thought he would create a system where ONLY the unions had free speech--instead he opened it up for everybody.
Yet, he is now apologizing for his mistake"--one that our founding Fathers would approve.
Under his campaign finance plan, corporations and individuals would be hampered in donating to candidates. Unions would be free to donate as much as they wanted, due to their numerous "Locals" and affiliates.
This has worked, to a point. Now, with the proliferation of Independent Expenditure Committees, the unions no longer have the advantage and for this Ross Johnson is apologizing.
But, one part of his plan did work. Now it is difficult for people of modest means to run for office. The Johnson plan wiped out a whole category of candidates--those that are not rich.
That is what Johnson should apologize for, not only for his attempt to stop free speech.
