  • Sacramento Bee Circulation Drops Another 12.6%

A year ago the Sacramento Bee lost 14% of its circulation in six month. They are doing better, in the past six months they "only" lost 12.6%.

" According to the Audit Bureau of Circulations, paid weekday circulation at The Bee fell to 217,545 for the six months ending Sept. 30. That compared with 248,855 in March, a 12.6 percent drop, and 253,249 a year earlier, a 14 percent drop. Sunday circulation fell to 267,974. That was down from 291,115 six months ago, or 7.9 percent, and 299,207 a year ago, or 10.4 percent.

By contrast, The Bee recorded a gain in its total audience - a figure that includes paid print circulation, the estimated "pass-along" print readership and the paper's Internet audience.

That grew to 1,276,300, up 1.6 percent from March and 1.8 percent from a year ago"

Yet they are happy as clams--they are claiming a 1,276,000 readership--based on "the estimated "pass-along" print readership and the paper's Internet audience." So, when I click on the site 6-8 times a days, it is counted as 6-8 "readers". Great game, but does not pass the giggle test. That is like me reading the Metro, front and sports section of the Bee and counting as three readers.

The Bee and the Chronicle are still vying to see which one closes first. What is your guess?
