  • California government gives the poor a new legal right

If you are poor and commit a crime, you get a free attorney, paid for by the taxpayers.

Now the Governor and Democrats have determined that if you are poor, the taxpayers will pay for your attorneys for civil matters as well.

"The program is the first in the nation to recognize a right to representation in key civil cases and provide it for people fighting eviction, loss of child custody, domestic abuse or neglect of the elderly or disabled.

Advocates for the poor say the law, which Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed this week, levels the legal playing field and gives underprivileged litigants a better shot at attaining justice against unscrupulous landlords, abusive spouses, predatory lenders and other foes."

Wait till this program, in under a year blows a gigantic hole in the budget, in the court system and society.

This allows frivolous lawsuits (who will stop them, the attorneys making money from the lawsuits?), clogging of the courts and a new welfare entitlement program--your own lawyer.

This is as sick as it gets. Another reason that government has too much money. At the same time they are releasing criminals early, schools are firing teachers, roads are not getting fixed, attorneys for frivolous lawsuits for the poor are a priority. Shame on us for allowing this.

I saw this bill a long time ago, and thought it had zero chance of becoming law due to the factors mentioned in the article. having been on the recieving end of unevenly financed judicial proceedings, I think it has some merit. But speaking as a taxpayer, it's ridiculous.
