For years the unions have been squeezing government into higher wages, more benefits and better pensions--none of which had revenues to produce the money. Of course, when you own the city council or school boards, that makes it easier to negotiate--you are negotiating with your "employees".
Now, with the bankruptcy of Vallejo, and the coming bankruptcy of dozens of cities and counties due to sweetheart union contracts, ownership means nothing.
Now the unions need to cut wages and benefits or lose control of local government. The poor and middle class they have controlled can no longer afford the taxes to keep the unions in the penthouse.
Maybe the union members will realize their leadership has harmed them and hurt their neighbors.
