No one doubts that the worst schools in California, and among the worst in the nation (60% drop out rate is an example) are those of LAUSD. The union stranglehold of a generation have taken their toll.
Yesterday the LAUSD Board of Trustees, all seven owned by the unions, voted 6-1 to allow up to 250 schools to be run by other than unions. This is a major statement--that even those owned by unions understand why the worst schools are in LA.
"The action signals a historic turning point for the Los Angeles Unified School District, which has struggled for decades to boost student achievement. District officials and others have said their ability to achieve more than incremental progress is hindered by the powerful teachers union, whose contract makes it nearly impossible to fire ineffective tenured teachers. Union leaders blame a district bureaucracy that they say fails to include teachers in "top-down reforms."
If LAUSD can cut the cords from the unions, so can your district. Your choice, quality education for your child or union control of the classroom.
