Ken Mettler is a member of the Kern High School Board of Trustees. He is also a good friend. Ken has presented a good plan to reduce the expenses of his district, so they do not have to fire teachers and kill important programs.
For instance:
a. Our teachers have realized a compensation increase of 40 percent since the year 2000 due to raises and longevity steps.
* A reasonable 5 percent or more salary reduction to save fellow employees jobs is not uncommon in the private sector. In fact, many private sector individuals have seen their income reduced by 20 percent to 100 percent -- this is the economic reality.
b. * Our Kern High teachers pay CTA dues of $943 each annually, totaling $1.6 million dollars per year. This amount could fund 30 full-time teachers' salaries, which is a loss of 27,000 classroom hours in a year. The CTA dues are set to rise again to pay for more political activity.
In other words, the unions are harming the jobs of 30 teachers, forced to pay dues, and still lose their jobs
It is time to stop the union efforts to destroy students education. Make joining voluntary, make the unions collect their own "dues".
