Thanks to the San Bruno gas line explosion, the utilities are going to have to provide safer pipeline--something they should have done in the first place. Oh, those were paid for by the ratepayers.
Now that PG&E screwed up, the ratepayers are going to be forced by government to bail them out.
"Rates paid by natural gas customers, including residents, businesses and power plants, would increase to fund new safety measures, such as more frequent inspections, new maintenance regimes and the installation of automatic shut-off valves to help officials cut off gas supplies to a burning pipeline.
“The unique circumstances of PG&E's pipeline records and pipeline strength testing program for its pre-1970 pipeline[s] may require extraordinary safety investments," CPUC staff wrote in the announcement. "Our ratemaking authority empowers this Commission to impose such ratemaking consequences as the public interest may require."
Don't you love how government keeps you poor?
