  • Bankrupt, Cop Firing, Oakland, To Build a Stadium?

Oakland has fired 80 cops. They are about to fire 70 more. Dozens of cops have retired or moved to other cities--and not being replaced.

Yet, the fools running Oakland are spending tax dollars to determine if they want to spend more tax dollars to build a worthless, money losing stadium.

"And that is why while the Oakland A’s play footsie with San Jose, the city of Oakland is moving ahead with its own plan for a stadium. In fact, the Oakland City Council will vote Tuesday night on whether to spend $750,000 on an environmental impact report for a new 39,000-seat park at Victory Court, near Jack London Square.

Author Neil deMause — who co-wrote the book “Field of Schemes: How the Great Stadium Swindle Turns Public Money Into Private Profit” and maintains a blog by the same name — says that it’s typical of sports leagues to play cities off each other to get the best deal.

“Possibly the best recent baseball example is when MLB played off D.C. against Northern Virginia in bidding to become the new home of the Expos,” deMause said in an e-mail. “Washington ‘won,’ though you could equally argue that Virginians still get to root for the team without the $600 million in stadium debt, so they really win.”

Who says Oakland has a growing deficit? Not the City Council, they have money, your money, to burn.
