  • Fleischman: Part-Time Elected Officials - A Commitment To Service, Not Perks

Sometimes we have heroes as elected officials. It looks like the new crop of local officials in Orange County is starting a trend.

The office of city council member is a part time job except in the largest cities. Yet, for example, in Simi Valley, the council gets about $14,000 in salary and another $39,000 in benefits. The new Mayor of Simi Valley, Bob Huber, is refusing all the benefits except for health care.

Then you have people like Steve Baric, the new city council member for Rancho Santa Margarita.

Baric has gone the full way. He is refusing to accept ANY benefit for being a part time council member. That makes Steve Baric a hero of taxpayers.

There are others like Fred Whitaker, Bruce Whitaker, Jim Righeimer and Jim Lalloway that have done the same.

In these troubling times Baric and the others are models for what public service is all about.
