After pointing out the correct location of the sun and a white dwarf in a Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, Mira Loma High School won the U.S. Department of Energy National Science Bowl today at the National Building Museum in Washington, DC.
Mira Loma defeated Lexington High School from Lexington, Mass., in the Jeopardy-style match and will receive an all-expense-paid science research trip to the International Science School at the University of Sydney, Australia.
"It's unbelievable," said Mira Loma coach and chemistry teacher James Hill. "It hasn't sunk in yet."
Their win marked a clean sweep for California schools as Hopkins Junior High School of Fremont won the middle school division of the national science competition. Mira Loma took second nationally last year.
Members of Mira Loma's team include Edward Lee, Andrew Chen, Heather Yee, Rishi Kulkarni and Sriram Pendyala.
"We are pretty excited," said Kulkarni, the team captain. "We are still in the disbelieve stage. We haven't felt it yet."
The 19th annual national science bowl featured more than 500 students from 42 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
More than 20,000 students participated in regional science bowls. Regional winners, including 67 high schools and 36 middle schools, were awarded all-expense paid trips to the national bowl.
The top 16 high school teams at the national championship each received a $1,000 cash prize for their school science department.
"We are fortunate at Mira Loma of having a history of doing well in this competition," Hill said. "You have a nucleus of students who help keep it going. They become specialists in a field of science."
The national science bowl was created in 1991 to encourage students to excel in mathematics and science and to pursue careers in these fields.
