  • Key West Sac department heads retiring

Two veteran West Sacramento city government officials are retiring after 20 years of service.
Val Toppenberg, director of redevelopment, and Stephen Patek, director of public works, both began working for West Sacramento in 1989. They were hired just before the city was to begin a period of rapid growth.
City Manager Toby Ross credited Toppenberg with playing big roles in such West Sac projects as the Ziggurat building and River Walk along the Sacramento River, the IKEA store and Raley Field. Mayor Christopher Cabaldon said that Patek was a key player in flood protection, widening of Jefferson Boulevard and West Capitol Avenue improvements.
The two were honored last month at the state of the city gathering.
Ross is "reviewing options" for who will rerplace the two directors.
