Students of Whitney Avenue Elementary School were directed to a neighboring school this morning after the parking lot and three classrooms were flooded.
Water coursed through the parking lot and a breezeway into the school at Whitney and Eastern avenues forcing the temporary closure. Possible cause of the flooding was a fire hydrant spewing water near the school on Whitney Avenue.
The water has been shut off but three classrooms were damaged. School officials were mopping up the soaked classrooms this morning.
When students of the K-8 school at 4248 Whitney Ave. arrived this morning they were directed to nearby Churchill Middle School, about two blocks away on Whitney Avenue.
"We are optimistic that we will be able to bring them back this afternoon to Whitney Avenue," said school spokesman Trent Allen.
