Despite significantly lower gas prices, California drivers used 1.8 percent less gasoline in January this year compared with the same month in 2008, the state Board of Equalization said Thursday.
The board said consumption in January was 1.21 billion gallons, about 22 million gallons less than what motorists used in January 2008.
The statewide average price of gas in January was $2.05 per gallon, down 37.9 percent from $3.30 in January last year.
BOE said gasoline sold at January's prices generated about $184 million in sales tax during the month, an estimated $117 million less than what was generated in January 2008.
Diesel fuel totaled 197.3 million gallons in January, down 37.4 million, or 16 percent, from the year-ago period. Diesel prices averaged $2.30 in January, down 32.8 percent from $3.42 in January last year.
