  • Sacramento school hosts fundraiser for ailing Deftones bassist

Chi Cheng, bass player for the noted Sacramento band Deftones, has been in a coma since a November car wreck. Leonardo da Vinci School, where his child attends, is hosting a fundraising breakfast on May 16.
A local elementary school club and service organization are hosting a breakfast to raise money for Deftones bassist Chi Cheng, who remains in a coma following a November car accident.
The Breakfast Optimist Club of Sacramento and the Junior Optimist Club at Leonardo da Vinci School are hosting the pancake breakfast from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. May 16, said Diane Soule, the school's community liason.
The fundraiser will benefit Cheng, whose medical bills continue to mount. A car crash in early November in Santa Clara left Cheng in a coma.
Cheng has a child in sixth grade at the school.
Soule said Cheng's condition has taken a toll on the campus.
"The kids all see the parents a lot, so everybody knows everyone's mom and dad," she said. "Certainly at that grade level, I think it's hard on the kids."
The fundraiser, which will include live music, raffles and a silent auction, will be in the school cafeteria.
Tickets are on sale at the school, 4701 Joaquin Way, Sacramento. Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children. Tickets sold at the event will be $6 for adults and $4 for children.
For more information about Cheng's condition or to donate directly, go to www.oneloveforchi.com.
