Sacramento city and county officials are asking residents with questions about swine flu to call the region's 2-1-1 information line.
Sacramento County's Division of Public Health has received hundreds of calls from people concerned about the flu outbreak, according to a joint news release from the county and city of Sacramento.
Residents with non-emergency concerns are encouraged to call 2-1-1, or (800) 500-4931. Callers can speak with a live representative who can answer questions and provide information about swine flu, the release states.
The information line provides free, 24-hour community health and disaster information and is working in conjunction with the Sacramento Office of Emergency Services to provide current information about swine flu.
While public health officials want to speak with people involved in clusters or schools, general questions can usually be best answered through the county's Web site, doctors or through the 2-1-1 information line, said Kerry Shearer, spokesman for the county health department.
"It's providing a great service and taking some of the phone call pressure off," Shearer said.
