In line with industry trends, The Bee's print circulation continues to fall but its total audience is growing, according to figures released today.
The Audit Bureau of Circulations, in its semi-annual report on the newspaper industry, said The Bee's average weekday paid circulation fell 7.5 percent in the six months ending March 31, to 248,855 from 268,754 a year earlier.
The industry average was 7.1 percent, ABC said.
Sunday circulation fell 5.2 percent, to 291,115 from 307,480. The industry average was 5.4 percent.
Part of the decline has been deliberate. The Bee, like many papers, has been scaling back on circulation outside its principal coverage areas and to regions that don't interest local advertisers.
The newspaper industry believes that its true "reach" should be measured by its total audience, defined by paid circulation, estimated "pass-along" print readership and online audience. By that measure, The Bee's audience jumped 21 percent from a year earlier, to 1,256,551 from 1,041,736, according to ABC.
