Tourists and business travelers can still come to Mexico safely if they're feeling well enough and are careful, Sacramento Consul General Alejandra Bologna said Monday.
"They.don't need to be afraid, they just need to take precautions," said Bologna.
He said Mexican officials have been handing out surgical masks at airports in Mexico City and other affected areas. Soccer games are watched on TV, not in closed stadiums, schools have been closed and Mexico has annouced the high alert to the nation on April 23.
"They have the medicine to treat flu cases," said Bologna, adding that 1,324 patients are under obervation to determine whether they have swine flu. The number of deaths are 100, mostly in Mexico City and the the State of Mexico.
"Mexican authorities have been in contact with U.S. and Canadian health officials and the World Halth Organization, which has not put Mexico under quarantine," Bologna said.
There are roughly 400,000 Mexican Americans in the six-county Sacramento area, Bologna said, but flights from Sacramento to Guadalajara and four weekly flights gto Cabo San Lucas haven't been cancelled. Bologna hasn't heard of any cases of swine flu in those areas.
