UC launches immigrant health research center

The Migration and Health Research Center is the first academic organization to focus on the illnesses and injuries among immigrants, said Marc Schenker, the center's director and a UC Davis Department of Public Health Sciences professor.

The Sacramento region's diversity makes it the ideal place to conduct research, officials said.

"Sacramento has been labeled the most integrated city in the country," said Barry Klein, UC Davis' vice chancellor for research

I thought there were already government studies on occupational illness and injury.

There have been studies in the past concerning which races are more susceptible to what diseases.

From what I have seen from working with Mexicans straight from Mexico is that they tend to be oblivious to hazard. They tend to stand in a location of imminent hazard telling each other funny stories, or attempt work for which the are inexperienced concerned the job performed and are ignorant of safe work procedures.

There is about the same percentage of stupid people as you find everywhere else, but cultural norms and a reluctance to admit one is inexperienced contribute to a high rate of industrial injuries for Mexican nationals working in America.

To paraphrase Gustavo Arellano:

UC proposes 32 percent increase in student fees

UC officials on Thursday released a plan that calls for a 15 percent increase in basic student fees starting in the winter 2010 term, followed by another 15 percent hike next fall.
