  • secretary of state challenges hackers

Current secretary of state Debra Bowen issued a challenge to UC Davis computer scholars to try and hack into the sates electronic voting machines. Concerns over the security of the system would be eased if none of the hackers could successfully enter the secured areas containing voter information or even manipulate actual votes and counts.
Although electronic voting worries many of California's citizens, another topic seems just as troubling; Voter fraud. During last years election, many registered voters complained that there are few safegaurds in effect to protect the sanctity of the citizen vote, with the threat of illegal alien voting highlighting that concern. These fears were not addressed by then sitting secretary of state Bruce Macpherson when he authorized and paid for advertisements clearly aimed at hispanic neighborhoods encouraging immigrants not to be intimidated by an advertisement circulating in a southern California district that advised non-citizens that they could not to register or vote. The full page ad in some newspapers carried a message from a hispanic interest group on the same lines as the secretary of states seal. Many complained that this was both improper and may have encouraged hispanic aliens to participate in the elections.
Debra Bowen's recent fears of electronic security may be well founded though. The last thing the state needs is for voters to have one more reason to suspect vote tampering. If there is voter fraud, the people of California don't need that result changed by outside hands.
