I wasn't able to attend this today but heard some of it on the radio. I heard the freeway was jammed to get there and "thousands attended", the heat may have kept some people from going as the needle hit 95 degrees out in Corona.
Thousands take part in Corona tax protest
The event focuses on peoples' anger at proposed state increases.
CORONA – Several thousand people turned out at a rally Saturday hosted by KFI's "The John and Ken Show" to protest proposed state tax increases.
Show co-host Ken Chiampou said he and his co-host, John Kobylt, were giving the crowd an opportunity to voice its anger and opposition to six ballot propositions that, if passed, would raise taxes.
"If you've seen the polls, people are really, really angry at Sacramento," Chiampou told the crowd. "We're in a recession. Who in the world would talk about raising taxes?"
Chiampou and Kobylt estimated the crowd size at 5,000, but law enforcement officials did not have an estimate on the size as of 6 p.m.
An hour into the three-hour rally, a line of cars trying to exit the 15 freeway to get to the rally stretched a mile back.
Members of the crowd gave John and Ken various images of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to put into a giant shredder. The talk show hosts also blindfolded members of the audience and let them whack away at pinatas with Schwarzenegger's face on it, as well as a nude, full-sized pinata of the governor.
As a 12-year-old boy named Joseph broke a pinata open, chocolates covered with gold foil in the shape of coins fell out.
"We've got some tax money in there," Kobylt said.
Some members of the crowd dressed as pirates, Uncle Sam and even a full-sized chicken to represent state legislators who were invited to attend the rally, but did not appear.
Others like David Purdon of Orange, were content to wear shorts and a T-shirt.
"It's obvious that the legislators in Sacramento are representing what the people want," Purdon said.
