34 illegal immigrants found in Phoenix drop house

    Jun. 8, 2009 10:15 PM
    Associated Press

PHOENIX - Authorities have busted up a Phoenix drop house where they found 34 illegal immigrants and nine suspected smugglers Monday.

Department of Public Safety Officer Robert Bailey says authorities were notified of the west Phoenix drop house by a citizen who paid a ransom to get a family member released from the house.

He says many of the Mexican immigrants were held in the house for up to 30 days, and that some of them reported being beaten as the smugglers demanded more money for their release.

He says two boys, ages 13 and 15, and a woman who was two months pregnant were among those being held. No one needed medical treatment.

Bailey says the smugglers were arrested, while the immigrants were to be turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Bailey says this is the third major bust of a drop house in Phoenix since Friday.

There was an illegal drop house around the corner from where I lived, but before I snapped to what was going on, the operation had been terminated.

It was a very large house, and take black and white pictures of it and it might look like something which could have been used for the Adams Family house. Has turrets and everything, if it wasn't so cheerfully painted one would expect to see gargoyles perched around the roof.

There were a LOT of Hispanic faces we saw as we traveled by, and we never saw the same face twice. For all the people who were in and traveled through the place, there was rarely a car parked on the premises, and certainly no older cars parked in back with flat tires and the hood raised in various stages of never accomplished repair. I never saw a car enter or leave. It was very quiet, no ear splitting Ranchera and Nortena music beer fueled carne asada debauches. There were children seen from time to time, but there were no children's toys, swing sets, bicycles, dogs, chickens, or the rest. Not much visible activity for the human presence. Very unusual.
