SUV search on I-15 turns up cocaine
Two people were arrested Thursday for allegedly smuggling 52 pounds of cocaine in a Ford Explorer on Interstate 15 near Temecula, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection news release stated.
A 26-year-old man and 22-year-old woman, whose names weren't released, were stopped near the Border Patrol's checkpoint and interviewed separately. Agents determined the man and woman gave conflicting answers. The agents then summoned a Border Patrol dog to search the vehicle.
The agents found 20 bundles of cocaine in a shallow compartment built into the vehicle roof. The cocaine had an estimated street value of $426,600.
The suspected smugglers and drugs were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration. The driver's two daughters, ages 1 and 3, who were in the vehicle, were turned over to a social services agency.
To date, Border Patrol agents say they have seized nearly 1,000 pounds of cocaine in the San Diego Sector.
